SUMMARY:IWCS Spring Fling - March 24-28\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The International Wood Collectors Society’s (IWCS) new Spring Fling will be held at Shocco Springs\, Talladega\, AL\, March 24-28\, 2025.  You can expect this to be a must attend IWCS meeting at this first-class conference center.  The Spring Fling will be replacing the Winterfest at Lake Yale\, FL.  Classes and demonstrations will be conducted throughout the Spring Fling.  There will be a sawmill milling logs for custom orders and for the auction.  Plan on having a lot of fun during the fling\, continuing the fellowship established with other IWCS members and as always being able to make new friendships with new attending members.  In addition\, there will be many opportunities to collect some new wood species\, wood samples\, craft items and lumber. \nIf you are interested in giving a wood related class or demonstration\, please contact Rick Long at rrlong1994@gmail.com.  Remember the meeting is what we make of it and based on last year’s meeting it will be a great time for all attendees.  If you have not been to Shocco Springs\, which is a great location with a lot to do in the area\, now is your chance. \nAnyone that would like to help out helping with the meeting registration efforts or giving a helping hand during the fling please contact Rhonda & Rick Long at: 812-327-9565- or rrlong1994@gmail.com. \nRegistration: Early registration is recommended by November 1st\, 2024.  See the registration form. \nMore to come\, check back here and see the World of Wood (WoW) for updated information about the Spring Fling. \nIf anyone would like to sponsor a Spring Fling for 2026 at a different location\, please let the IWCS Board before next year’s meeting.

SUMMARY:Wood Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever look at a piece of wood and wonder what wood it is? And why it looks the way it does? Were you ever confused about which wood it is: mahogany\, walnut\, cherry\, or poplar? \nThis three-day hands-on workshop at the dynamic Historic Deerfield is taught by Randy S. Wilkinson and will answer all these questions and more. It is designed specifically for curators\, collectors\, antique dealers\, appraisers\, and conservators.  The goal of this workshop is to familiarize the student with the physical properties of wood in order to recognize species specific cell structures. No experience is necessary. \nClass setup at the studio\nBasic wood anatomy will be introduced\, including grain\, figure\, fundamental differences between softwoods and hardwoods\, and more. The student will learn to identify 19 common woods that are used in American decorative arts using a 10x loupe. \nWe will be using the collection of Historic Deerfield to identify wood once it is made into an object. Students will get the rare opportunity to see some of the great treasures the Historic Deerfield has to offer while learning to identify wood on site. To augment the experience\, a curator guided collections tour is included. \n  \n  \n  \nNo experience is necessary. Class fee includes a hardwood sample kit\, 10x loupe\, book (Identifying Wood) and Friday lunch. \nRandy S. DESCRIPTION:Message from Don Smith: \nThe 2024 winter meeting is soon approaching 3 months from now\, however our contract with Lake Yale requires we pay our 2nd nonrefundable deposit on Dec. 4th which is quickly approaching. I will have to adjust the numbers on our contract before this second deposit is due so they can adjust the actual contract and our next deposit. At that time they will also adjust our room reservations\, currently we have half the Palm building and all the bottom floor at the Magnolia. Our current contract is based on a member count of 62 registered attendees\, we currently have 23 register attendees. If you are considering attending the meeting (and we sure hope you are!)\, I would like to ask that you send in your registrations sooner rather than later.
