It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Holder announces her passing. Mary, a life-long Calgarian, attended St. Mary’s Girls school. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years, Charles, and their children, Andrew and Lesley Anne (Shawn) and grandchildren, Lauren and Rachel.
Mary graduated in Nursing at the Holy Cross Hospital in 1960. Her career covered a wide range of activities including business, education, nursing and community involvement. She obtained a BA and MSc from U of C and became a Certified Psychologist in Alberta and a Professional Retirement Planner. Mary worked as a nurse for over 50 years – the last 30 years in psychiatry at the Foothills Hospital. She also held several sessional appointments teaching in the field of gerontology.
Mary was a committed community volunteer. She served on numerous boards and committees related to gerontology, retirement education and senior citizens. A Past President of the Alberta Association on Gerontology, she was awarded an honorary life membership. In 1996, she received a Canada Volunteer Award for her community involvement. Mary enjoyed reading, travel, and outdoor pursuits. She was a member of the Tuesday Hikers and the Calgary Winter Club for over 40 years.
Most of all, Mary will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends. She was always supportive in times of need and thoughtful in remembering special events.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18 Ave. SW Calgary) on Monday, February 3, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family would respectfully appreciate a donation to the Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta, #102 5636 Burbank Cres SE, Calgary, AB T2H 1Z6, Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca.
