Myrtle Cockrell passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Myrtle started her career as a housewife and supervisor at the switchboards for General Telephone.

She was elected to public office as treasurer and then auditor of Putnam County. She won awards for making the most money for Putnam County during her tenure. She was also awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash and the Distinguished Hoosier Award from Indiana governors.

After retirement Myrtle and her husband William Cockrell worked as secretary/treasurer of the International Wood Collectors Society.

Myrtle is survived by her husband, William Cockrell; her sons, Doug and Dan Cockrell and his wife Carla; siblings Emilie Ann (Mann) Cathcart, Marilyn Sue (Mann) Martin and James Hugo Mann; and grandchildren, Dylan Cockrell, Kaeli Cockrell and Ian Cockrell.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her father Emil Albert Mann and her mother Edith Costa`Mann.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, where the family received friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral. Interment followed in Clinton Falls Cemetery.
